Notes The unique sound of the World Quintet (formerly known as Kol Simcha) has captivated the audiences at New York's Carnegie Hall as well as the most renowned jazz, classical and world music festivals on three continents. Since its inception in 1986, the ensemble again and again added emotional deepness to celebrated European theatre, dance and movie productions. Pairing a front line of clarinet and flute with a swinging, tightly knit rhythm section of piano, bass and drums, it combines a variety of styles and influences ranging from the sophisticated and spontaneous improvisations of American jazz and the instrumental virtuosity of western classical music to exotic Mediterranean melodies and sensual Middle Eastern rhythms.

The World Quintet's all-original repertoire is characterized by stylistic openness and also includes works for the band and symphony orchestra. The quintet has worked with famous classical orchestras such as the Basle Symphony, Munich Radio Orchestra and London Mozart Players. A cooperation with the Sinfonietta de Lausanne was documented on the band's fourth album, "Symphonic Klezmer", in 1996. In 1998 and 2000 the ensemble also contributed to "Jenseits der Stille" and "Gripsholm", two popular European movies.

For their new album, they not only changed their name (according to their stylistic globalism), but reached out to set a towering milestone in their career. In thrilling ballads and dramatic groove tunes they mix their contemporary klezmer sound with free jazz improvisation and symphonic formulas. In an amazing feature song, guest star Herbert Gronemeyer sings a poem by Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger that was set to music by David Klein.

Gaetano Valli is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader that comes out of the Billy Bauer and Wes Montgomery schools of jazz guitar. He is always smooth and articulate, and compositionally balanced, especially in group settings. This set showcases Valli's compositions in groups everything from duets to quintets with a rotating group of musicians. His use of a semi-acoustic guitar creates a resonance and warmth in his playing that many don't possess, especially since he plays it like he would a Gibson Byrdland. From the opener, "Paludi," his swinging, arpeggiated harmonics are in evidence: they are rooted in the blues and gypsy swing, and they play in constant harmony with the horns and keyboards rather than contrapuntally. The music is very smooth yet interesting because of its intricate changes and dimensional sonorities, which offer a different read on whoever is soling at any given moment. He takes things outside in the off minor, bebop science fiction tune "Auguri Tatiana," but as the staccato notes come flying off the neck, just as a level of intensity happens where something unexpected may happen, he brings it back into then familiar blues/tango/film noirish shuffle that so many tunes here have. And that is the difficulty in listening to the entire recording, one tune begins to bleed into another after awhile, making it very difficult ? even in trio and quartet settings to distinguish one track from the next. The playing is awesome, perhaps too much so for its own good. Next time out they should go for less safety, more rough edges.

Elemer Balazs has been a central figure of jazz life in Hungary for fifteen years both as a drummer and as a composer, and since 1995 he has been leading his own groups. He played in the band No-Spa, was the pillar of Trio Midnight, and is the permanent drummer of the Creative Art Ensemble. He has performed at several international festivals, including Perugia, Marciac, Nuremberg, Zurich, Munich, Copenhagen, Tallin; he has worked with Anette Lowman, Stepko Gutt, Zbigniew Namyslowsky, Jukka Perko, Paolo Fresu, Stephane Belmondo, Steve Houben, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Pat Metheny and Al Jarreau.
